Our Approach

At Odd Harmonics, sound is a sandbox, which means hands-on, creative experimentation first--NO EXPERTISE REQUIRED! Once we've developed an understanding of the building blocks of sound, that's when we dive into more traditional musical concepts.

By engaging students through electronic music creation and DJing, we reinforce what students may already be learning in piano lessons or band class.

Meet Our Founder

Headshot of Odd Harmonics founder, Nick Newhouse
Nick Newhouse
Brown University '14

Like many others, Nick's music education started with piano lessons. But his love for making music began in earnest at Brown University where he majored in both Computer Music and Computer Science. His 10+ year music career began as a composer for ads at The Music Playground. He's since released music with independent record labels such as Tiny Waves, Mad Zoo, New Dawn Collective, & Materia Music, and has performed as a DJ around the country.

Nick and his wife have put down roots in Park Slope, Brooklyn where they've very recently started a family together (their 11-month-old is already the proud owner of the Fisher-Price Mix and Learn DJ Table).

Sound Scavengers Camp

Our Sound Scavengers summer day camp introduces kids to the world of electronic music without the use of smartphones, tablets, or computers. We spend each day outside, engaging with our surroundings and nurturing a curiosity for sound.

Throughout the week, we work together to find, record, and program sounds into a short piece of music with the help of super portable Pocket Operator samplers & sequencers. If you're interested in learning more or reserving time for next summer, please email nick@oddharmonics.studio

Private Lessons

We offer lessons in-home, outside, and at our studio location in Red Hook for $110/hour.

For students ages ~7-11 we use a simple, offline DJ/beat-making workflow to teach the fundamentals of electronic music. For more advanced music production concepts, we transition to the computer to teach the same production software used by music professionals worldwide.

Whether you want to punch up a portfolio for school applications or play your first DJ set, we'll tailor the lessons to your specific needs.

DJ Workshops

DJ Workshop with Nick and two new students

Our low-pressure DJ workshops allow students to learn the basics of DJing without having to invest anything other than their time.

Each workshop is capped at 4 students so as to give everyone plenty of time to get their hands on the decks.
