Over 10 sessions, you'll learn the skills you need to create clean, confident mixes. We'll cover beatmatching, EQ, loops, effects, set building, mixing in key, stems, and more. We break down every concept using simple, concrete examples for you to practice on club standard hardware. Our small class size ensures that you'll get plenty of individualized coaching. The only prerequisite is a love of music. We'll handle everything else so you can start DJing properly.

Our Approach

At Odd Harmonics, sound is a sandbox, which means hands-on, creative experimentation first--no expertise required! Once we've developed an understanding of the building blocks of sound, that's when we dive into more traditional musical concepts.

By engaging students through electronic music creation and DJing, we reinforce what students may already be learning in piano lessons or band class.

Meet Our Founder

Headshot of Odd Harmonics founder, Nick Newhouse
Nick Newhouse
Brown University '14

Like many music makers, Nick's music education started with piano lessons. But his love for making music began in earnest at Brown University where he majored in both Computer Music and Computer Science. His 10+ year music career began as a composer for ads at The Music Playground. He's since released music with independent record labels such as Tiny Waves, Mad Zoo, New Dawn Collective, & Materia Music, and has performed as a DJ around the country.

Nick and his wife have put down roots in Park Slope, Brooklyn where they've very recently started a family together (their 1 year old is already the proud owner of the Fisher-Price Mix and Learn DJ Table).

Private Lessons

Sound scavenger Kai programs a bass line
Kai writes his first bass line!

We offer lessons in-home and at our studio location in Red Hook for $110/hour.

For our youngest students, we make beat-making and DJing as simple and accessible as possible. We also incorporate screen-free, offline devices that reduce distractions while students develop their skills. When they're ready for more advanced music production concepts, we transition students to the iPad or computer to teach the same production software used by music professionals worldwide.

Whether you want to write & record an original song or just play your first DJ set, we'll tailor the lessons to your specific needs.

DJ Workshops

DJ Workshop with Nick and two new students

Our low-pressure DJ workshops allow students to learn the basics of DJing without having to invest anything other than their time. We host workshops for both adults and kids ages 8+.

Each workshop is capped at 4 students so as to give everyone plenty of time to get their hands on the decks. We take a small deposit to confirm your reservation, which we refund in full with your Google review.

Summer Camps

Sound Scavengers campers exploring Prospect Park

Each summer, we run two day camp programs for kids. Sound Scavengers (ages 8–10) is a screenless outdoor adventure where campers explore Prospect Park and create music using portable Pocket Operator samplers. Beat Builders (ages 10–12) is an immersive music production bootcamp where students record, arrange, and mix original tracks using Logic Pro on iPad.
